Psychometric tests are a psychological measurement tools designed to assess ability, skills and knowledge in an objective way.

The term aptitude test is often used interchangeably with psychometric test. Every year millions of psychometric test are administered for a wide variety of reasons, and rudimentary forms of testing can be dated back to at least 2200 B.C. Psychometric tests as we know them today are designed to assess broad areas of what a person can do. They tend not to be designed to measure knowledge or skill, rather focus on more general capability – most commonly numerical, verbal and diagrammatic reasoning and situational judgement. They are usually timed, although how much emphasis placed on time is usually dependent on what the test is measuring specifically. This can also test ability to work under pressure.

A psychometrist is permitted to use certain psychological tests (i.e., select, administer, score, interpret, and report on) and bill clients for this service, provided that appropriate training has been obtained and the necessary practical competencies have been developed related to the tests used.

Psychometrists are not permitted to use:
– Certain personality measures (e.g., TAT, CAT, Rorschach);
– Specialist neuropsychological measures;
– Measures that are used for the diagnosis of psychopathology (e.g., MMPI-2)

The term aptitude test is often used interchangeably with psychometric test. Aptitude tests will vary depending on the role and employer, but most often are timed tests assessing general abilities that will be required in the role being recruited.

Most commonly assessed is numerical, verbal and diagrammatic reasoning as these are required for many jobs. Questions will vary in complexity according to ability required to fulfil the role, but often will be relatively basic arithmetic, for example (in numerical tests) but under tough timed conditions to assess ability to work quickly but accurately under pressure.

Aptitude means a natural tendency or ability for something. So you can have an aptitude for anything!! But generally it’s used to describe a natural flare for something that requires skill – maths, painting or singing for example.

“Psychological tests measure psychological constructs such as personality traits, cognition, or emotional intelligence. ACs therefore differ from psychological tests as they are not tests but methods or procedures that use work-related simulations to assess work related skills, competencies, and behaviours displayed as observable actions.”
“The AC is not a test but rather a method of assessment that focuses on work-related behavioural observation and consists of a number of steps completed in sequential way. As such it is not a psychological test. ACs use competencies, skills and work-related behavioural constructs, rather than psychological constructs, that emanate from the job analysis and the study of work-related constructs. These work-related tasks and behaviours form the foundation of the AC method. Therefore, the AC method is not considered to be a purely psychological act.
However, if psychological constructs are measured as part of the AC by means of, for example, personality assessment, then the psychometric test used to measure personality must conform to the amended requirement for certification with the HPCSA. In these instances the use of these assessments are reserved for psychologists and the HPCSA Scope of Practice criteria apply.”

The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as:-
“Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential”

Coaching and mentoring may use the same skills and approach. Coaching will be contracted to a specific term – which can be extended. Mentoring is often a longer term relationship. A Mentor will most likely be in the same profession, sometimes in the same organization, and usually an experienced practitioner who has already walked the path the Mentee is now walking.

Coaching does not include providing advice – rather the focus is on the Coachee / Client’s own thinking. Mentoring will include telling – or offering advice, at times. Coaching involves the belief that the individual has the answers to their own problems within them. The coach is not a subject expert, but rather is focused on helping the individual to unlock their own potential. The focus is vey much on the individual and what is inside their head.

The Enneagram is an ‘ancient’ system for understanding personality.  It is a map of human nature which describes 9 different ways of relating – what motivates attitude and behaviours. Whilst we all resonate with a core type, everyone has a bit of each type.  Curious to know your type and what this would mean for you – contact me!
